Managerial Competencies For Educational Administrators

ITM Chennai organized a one day workshop on “Managerial competencies for educational administrators” on 26-06-2015. This event was organized in the purview of equipping academicians with managerial competencies to meet the challenging demands of fast evolving educational sector. Comprehensive and relevant Management development programs for the resource people in the education sector are much needed to overcome many development challenges related to their educational institutions and hence there is an increasing need to develop the managerial competencies of academician’s. Sustainable development in educational sector is possible when both academic knowledge and managerial skills go hand in hand. The event focused on assisting the academicians to have a smooth and seamless transition to administrative field which will help them to become better leaders. Dr Lalitha Balakrishnan, principal, M.O.P Vaishnav College for Women, Chennai, was the chief guest and  Ms Sumitra Gosh, Head – Special Initiatives TCS, Chennai was the Guest of honor. The event had active participation from senior faculty members of various institutions across Tamilnadu.

The event was initiated with the lighting of lamp by Dr Lalitha Balakrishnan, Dr Prasanna Sivanandam, Campus Head ITM Chennai, Prof P V Jaikumar, Registrar ITM Chennai, Prof H Ahammed Shafi, PGP coordinator and Dr Ramasubrahmaniam.



The event began seeking the blessings of Almighty with a prayer.

Prof Sathya Swaminathan welcomed the gathering. Dr Ramasubrahmaniam, senior faculty ITM, introduced the chief guest Dr Lalitha Balakrishnan, principal, M.O.P Vaishnav College for Women, Chennai.

Dr Lalitha Balakrishnan gave the inaugural address and spoke about the leadership and managerial competencies required for the educational administrators. She explained, how a leader in the academic environment should act as advisor, counselor, mentor, coach, motivator and risk taker



She emphasized that leading by example is the greatest way of leadership and leader should practice what they preach. She introduced the Leadership competence model and listed out the knowledge, attitude and skills required for educational administrators.

Dr Prasanna Sivanandam presented her a memento expressing ITM family’s gratitude towards her.

After the tea break, Session 1 started with Ms Yogalakshmi, Academics Relations Manager introducing the guest of honor, MS Sumitra Ghosh, Head- Special Initiatives TCS Chennai. She spoke about “Effective professional and personal communication”. She introduced herself as a “Student of Life”. Drawing parallels from” Alice in Wonderland”, she said how changes are inevitable in life and we have to embrace changes in life.



She insisted on having excellence as an attitude and good communication skills for personal and professional effectiveness. She pointed out that developing the right attitude is very important as the employers are seeking for employees who have a cultural fit with in the organization. 

Prof P V Jaikumar, Registrar, ITM Chennai, presented a memento to Ms Sumitra Ghosh, as a token of appreciation and gratitude.

It was immediately followed by Session 2 , which was a session on “Transactional Analysis”, presented by Dr Prasanna Sivanandam, Campus Head, ITM Chennai. She introduced Transactional Analysis as a method of understanding communication between people and also as a system of analyzing and understanding human relationship. She spoke about various ego states that exist in people like Child ego, Adult ego and a parent ego. She also explained various transactions like” complimentary” and “crossed” transactions.


 The session saw active interactions from all the participants. With various examples, she illustrated the how different transactions occur. A self explanatory questionnaire was provided to the participant to understand their ego states. She concluded saying that, it is very important to exhibit adult ego state to avoid conflicting situations.

It was followed by a self introduction by all participants and lunch break. Session 3 started after the lunch break, which was taken by Prof K Balapraveena, ITM Chennai.  


She spoke about Team “Building and Team Effectiveness”. It was an interactive session based on many team activities. She pointed out the difference between a team and a group and explained the factors leading to the success of an effective team. Various team activities ensured the team bonding and focused on achieving the goal within the time limits.

Session 4 started after the tea break and was taken by Prof P V Jaikumar, Registrar, ITM Chennai. He spoke about”Leadership Skills for Effective Administration”.


He explained the various skills an academician should possess to become a good administrator. 

He spoke about various mantras like PCA Mantra, POS DCC Mantra, CASH mantra etc which we will develop good leadership qualities in people. He emphasized that one should consecrate “PANCHAPANDAVAS” in their personality to become an outstanding leader. He listed out the qualities of various pandavas and how we should implement it in life.

It was followed by a feedback session, where participants shared their experience about the program and how it has impacted them. They also filled in the entry and exit impression, which was analyzed and the feedback was sent to all participants.

Dr Prasanna Sivanandam presented participation certificates to all the participants. Dr U Jayalakshmi, senior faculty, ITM Chennai, briefly summarized the content of whole sessions for the benefit of participants. Vote of thanks was delivered by Prof. H. Ahammed Shafi. PGP coordinator, ITM Chennai.

A group photo was taken at the end of the event which was sent to all the participants.



The event got good press coverage in prominent newspapers.



 The workshop on “Managerial Competencies for educational “ was a great success and increased the visibility OF ITM Business School. The positive feedback has encouraged ITM family to have more MDP’s on a periodical basis.
